2008 Health Fair
June 5 marked Florin Tech's second annual health fair. Professional health educators from local organizations such as UC Medical Center and Breathe California joined with medical assistant students from the Charles A. Jones Skills Center to provide health information. (For more photos, see the Photo Gallery)
The CAJ Skills Center students did blood pressure, pulse and blood sugar checks. Talks covered important issues like health care rights, keeping food healthy, juvenile obesity, asthma, and effective parenting.
Florin Tech students were joined by students from Pacific and Cesar Chavez morning adult ESL classes. Everyone learned a lot and came away feeling more confident about keeping healthy.
Flower Garden Blooms!
In the fall, Florin Tech's student council took donations of plants, bulbs, and seeds for an empty garden spot in the classroom area. Now the flowers are in bloom and students are caring for the garden and planting new plants. On Friday, April 18, Elsie Yun's class planted calla lillies, trimmed flowers, and weeded.
"Super Tuesday", Florin Tech Style
(More photos of "Super Tuesday" are in our photo gallery.
Tuesday could have been called "Super Tuesday" for Florin Tech's M-1 and M-2 students. It began with Mrs. Colmenares, an experienced pinata maker, teaching the students how to make pinatas. First, the students shredded newspaper. Then they coated newspaper with glue made from flour and water. After covering balloons with home ade glue-coated nwspaper, they added rope handles and then set the pinatas out to dry.

At 9:50, the pinata makers started walking down 24th Street to the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Library. After the librarian explained some of the library's services and materials, as well as her own experience as an immigrant from Taiwan, the students were given their own cards and told to check out two items.
